Beloved. Chosen. Precious. Protected. Loved. Forgiven. Redeemed.
Those are words that the Lord uses about us, and I know that, but I so often don’t live as if it is true. I hide behind “fine” and to do lists and unrelenting determination. I hide the hard parts of my story, and yet the past has a way of reaching into my present. My responses and ways of handling things are often a reflection of my past experiences, good or bad.
We hide behind “fine” because we are carrying our burdens alone. It seems easier to do this than to share our brokenness. But, I think when we live a life on the outside that is in contradiction to our hearts on the inside, that’s where our fake “fine” comes from. And it’s really hard to feel those promises of God through the wall that we have built around ourselves.
Everything changed for me when I shifted my focus off of myself and turned it to God. What we believe and what we allow our focus to be changes our thinking. Profoundly. Our daily living is impacted by our thought life and when we allow our thoughts to be saturated with the truth of how God sees us, it changes our lives.
When Moses had an identity crisis and he told God all about how he wasn’t qualified, God didn’t bolster his ego. He didn’t tell Moses about how greatly qualified he was. He didn’t validate Moses’ heavy burden at all.
No, God reminded Moses of who HE WAS.
The Great I Am.
So, what would happen if we took that idea, and instead of allowing our thoughts to be filled with the weight of our burdens, we shifted our focus instead to how God sees us? What if we didn’t focus so much on our brokenness, but turned out attention instead of how great God is?
