Do you ever get so busy that you tell yourself that you will take care of yourself just as soon as you get x, y and z done?
I have a tendency to do that- when faced with a particularly long list of to-do’s, I set about the tasks with focused determination. In my head it seems very logical- I really do want to rest, so just as soon as I get these things done, I can rest. The sooner I can do it, the sooner I can rest.
Except that there is always something still to do.
I’m trying to do better, and my doing better started with a cup of coffee.
When I realized that I was feeling stressed about the endless lists, I decided to stop by a little coffee shop in between my errands. For about $4.00 I found myself with about 20 minutes of quiet- time to think, write, people watch and just be still. I wrote this in my journal that day~
In a coffee shop with strangers, no one needs me. The piles around the house can’t be seen, there is nothing undone here that it my job to fix. So relaxing.
After I did that, I realized -surprise!- that the world did not fall apart when I stopped. Most weeks after that I would I actually add “coffee shop” to my sticky note list of errands. Suddenly, my errand running didn’t seem quite as awful any longer. I looked forward to those 20 minutes and they refreshed my heart and mind greatly.
This is just one small example, and there are so many more. The important thing to think about is what are you doing to fill your own well? We often hear that you can’t give what you don’t have, or you need to put your oxygen mask on yourself before you can help someone else…and I think maybe it’s true.
Our lives should be more than just doing. There should be some being. Think about these things: sleep habits, eating, exercise, inspiration through books or podcasts, disconnecting from technology, and physical rest. When you read that list, did something jump out at you? A longing for more of that? If you could just get more of that, then you can rest?
Since I am an introvert (INFJ), I know that I am refreshed by having a balance of some solitude in my life. I need time to process things. Giving myself those occasional 20 minutes coffee shop breaks fit right in with what refreshes me. Do you know what refreshes you? What you might long for or need more of in your life? If you do, is there something you can make the time for that will fill your own well? If you don’t know, maybe you could try some different things and see what works.
The important thing is just to find a little balance, tip the scales a little bit so you are caring for yourself too.
And, if you need a recommendation for a good coffee shop, just ask!
